Happy Harvest Festival!

autumnfestival

With the newest patch to Runes of Magic, a new holiday event has been introduced: the Harvest Festival! This festival was created when ancient villagers in the borderlands discovered a lush paradise to inhabit after suffering famine and destruction at the hands of a terrible blizzard. When these villagers followed bird footprints across the snowy landscape, they reached land so beautiful they decided to settle there, and created the festival to honor the discovery.

In the Harvest Festival, players can help gather supplies for the Autumn Banquet, and receive rewards that can be traded for special, limited-time gift boxes. Inside many cities in Taborea, tables are lined with a bountiful feast of harvest delicacies, including ostrich meat, providing them with useful nourishment for future adventures. This autumn event also involves gathering cinnamon leaves, which add a delicious taste to roasted ostrich, and can be traded for a special reward. An easy place join in the festival is the gates of Varanas, where players can help gather the provisions for the feast, and inside Varanas’ central plaza, where loaded tables of food await. Enjoy joining in the delicious festivities!

“Tell Us Your Story” Winning Entry!

FAI decided to hold a creative writing contest recently called “Tell Us Your Story.” The idea is for players to share interesting moments they have experienced in the world of Runes of Magic, whether they are funny, strange, or anything else worthy. During the two weeks period, we were pleasantly surprised by all the entries submitted! Thank you to everyone who sent in an entry! We thoroughly enjoyed reading all of them.

After careful reading of all the stories received, we have chosen the top three winners.

1st place- Smedley

2nd place- Meru

3rd place- Trobbins

All three will win special in-game items, and here is Smedley’s hilarious short story.

It was a dark night in the Howling Mountains and the only player online was a tired newbie named Noobstixx, who had been gathering resources for what seemed like all day. He was heading back to the Pioneer Village to see if any resources respawned when suddenly a level 50/50 mage priest wearing a long crimson robe with a light blue collar and wielding a small golden wand not much bigger than a tablespoon logged in. Noobstixx quickly hid behind a tree, thinking that the mage priest would PK him and steal his hard earned resources.

“Oh sorry I scared you, didnt think anyone else would be online.” The mage priest had a surprisingly calm and gentle voice. “Who are you and why are you here?” Noobstixx shouted, drawing his small beginner dagger that looked more like a butter knife than a dagger. “My name is Uberstixx, I often help out newbies in Silverspring and the Howling Mountains, but tonight i’m hunting for my old enemy Bloodystixx.

Then Noobstixx asked the most ridiculous question he could think of at the moment: “Oh really, can I come too :P ?” Uberstixx chuckled and replied, “Well sure you can try and kill him for me but you wont be able to even get to him as a newbie, here, take this! Uberstixx muttered a spell and suddenly fancy dark green armour with strength runes embedded in the breastplate started to form around Noobstixx’s body. A golden butter knife also began to form on the ground. Noobstixx now looked like a level 50 (minus the butter knife).

They were now ready to find and defeat the extremely frightening Bloodystixx, so they headed north to Silverspring and then turned east to Ravenfell, as they arrived at the Abandoned Fortress, they saw Bloodystixx leaning against a wall, attempting to strike a cool pose. “So you came to fight me again, Uberstixx? Looks like you even brought a little friend with you!”, Bloodystixx taunted. “Actually I won’t be the one fighting, my “little friend” will be.” Uberstixx smiled and pointed at Noobstixx.

“HIM? Havent you realized he’s only level 5???”, Bloodystixx asked, chuckling. “Wait a minute he is?” Uberstixx hovered his cursor over Noobstixx’s name and realized it was true, he had forgotten to cast the Get-To-Lvl-50-In-5-Secs spell. “Oh well if you want me to fight him then I guess i’ll beat him up for fun!” Bloodystixx shouted his battle cry and charged at Noobstixx, daggers raised. Thats when the message showed up: “You cannot attack players below level 15″.

Now it was Noobstixx’s turn to retaliate,(Thanks to Uberstixx’s PK-At-Any-Lvl spell) so he lunged at Bloodystixx with his golden butter knife, killing him instantly, at that same moment, all of the game servers shut down.

Interview with Costume Contest winners

From my own personal perspective; the best part of playing a game can be customizing your character. The character usually starts off without special abilities, skills, or items, but games like Runes of Magic allow lots of options for making your character look unique. After running our creative costume contest, we thought it would be interesting to share the stories behind the fascinating costumes of the winners.

PAX recap!

Now that office members have returned from PAX 2009, we would like to share our experiences with the Runes of Magic community. The exciting and chaotic world of a gaming convention is best experienced through the eyes of someone who was there, and luckily Hans, our office manager, took the time to share his impressions of the event.

“It’s been a crazy week in the office since I returned from spending my precious Labor Day weekend in Seattle, but I wanted to take a few minutes to share my experience in the land of the friendly kilt-wearing “enforcers”. I had previously been to business fairs (GDC, E3), but this was my first consumer fair, and it was both the most hectic and the most fun so far. We gave out all 900 t-shirts we had shipped up, featuring the Chapter 2 Elf-Warden on the back, along with untold hundreds of posters and fliers. Our booth space was a narrow strip situated on the skybridge. The only problem was that we were right next to the air conditioning vents for the whole building and we froze our Californian butts off! I felt even worse for our heroic, scantily-clad booth babes…

One striking difference between PAX and the previous business conferences I have attended was that the fans here were often shy about taking pictures with the booth babes. That’s what they’re there for people! And who could forget the webcam? Yes, we streamed a live feed from our booth to our fans around the world. Our far-flung followers alternated between chatting with the booth babes and chastising me for not making sure they spent more time out on the floor. The vigilant viewers caught a few choice moments, notably Eres climbing into a box which then tipped over, and some dude trying to hide under our table and getting regulated on by Icarii. But alas, the hard life of conventions took its toll on Icarii as well, and on Sunday morning he was so sick that I had to give two game tours, one with Raul Valle from pixelatedgeek.com, and the other with Paul Philleo from mpogd.com. Thank you for being a part of our PAX experience and we look forward to seeing more of you there next year!”

Screenshot judging

To start out our company blog at Frogster, intended to give an inside look into the office, we thought people might be interested in how we picked the top twenty entries for our screenshot contest. There were many different ways a screenshot could catch our eyes. Some of our favorites stood out by creating familiar real-world situations in the game, like eating expired food or awkward dates. We also liked shots that were aesthetically appealing, or immersed us in an interesting situation, such as a romantic wedding proposal or espionage through creative disguise.

A variety of strange and unique situations were shown in the screenshots, many of which appealed to our immature senses of humor, and others which stood out due to creative captions. A lot of creative editing was used, including adding funny captions to game graphics, such as encouraging characters to wear deodorant, or juxtaposing shots to create a comic strip. We also enjoyed funny depictions of in-game monsters or animals, doing crazy things like posing for pictures and eating characters. The visual appeal of a screenshot was also important, and we especially enjoyed captures of cool graphics from breathtaking landscapes or intense combat. Ultimately, we looked for the “wow factor” in our Top 20 screenshots, whether that was displayed through a witty sense of humor, the effort taken to create the screenshot in-game, or creative photo-editing.

After noticing a fair amount of debate regarding the selection of screenshots and the voting system, we have decided to pick the top three screenshots ourselves. Votes already placed will be considered. The criteria for the selection of the top three will be similar to that for the top 20, though more strict.
